Hello Färgglad Friend and welcome to October!
It’s full on Fall in Sweden now. The days are getting darker and darker and cozier and cozier. You will be happy to know that I have already enjoyed a few candlelit dinners, and it has been gloriously romantic. The summer like temperatures have dropped to a perfect crispness and all of my sweaters are getting ready to be cuddled in.
The only unfortunate problem of a warm and dry September is that all of the mushrooms are stunted. The woods are empty. Since becoming a mushroom foraging enthusiast in 2020 I have delighted in picking mushrooms every weekend during the Fall months. But there has been nothing to pick. So sad. I am actually hoping for tons of rain to come soon so we can at least pick a few rounds of mushrooms before the freezing temperatures roll in in November. We’ll just have to wait and see. Thankfully I have a very precious handful of my favorite black trumpet mushrooms dried from last season to enjoy at least.
Before moving on to work stuff I just want to mention that October is my favorite month of the year. Both of my kids were born this month so it feels extra special because of that. But I’ve also always loved this season for the cozy crispness and the changing of the leaves and the apples and the pumpkins. I’m not a huge fan of Halloween, but other than that bring on the gorgeous Fall aesthetic! (Minus pumpkin spice everything. Never tried one of those lattes before and probably never will.)
Alright, moving on to what’s going on in October here on Substack, Patreon and Skillshare. Let’s go!
Substack:
October 16th: Substack Theme Video Post. A Studio Tour!
October 30th: Free Feedback Session. Make sure to be subscribed to this newsletter to be notified on when and how to submit for the free feedback session.
Patreon:
This month in Collection Club we are going to be working on Haunted House collections together. As I mentioned above, I’m not really a Halloween fan but I think that I can make this theme work for me and am actually pretty excited to get started. I want to try to do something a little more Halloween sophisticated I think. Can’t wait to see you there in Collection Club.
In my Fun Friday group we are going to be focusing on narrative all month again as well as go back to basics. I kind of struggled last month with working on narrative illustrations. It doesn’t come natural or easy to me like working on landscapes has become. So I really want to take you all on my personal journey of remembering what I like about narrative illustration and working traditionally and trying my best to move forward with a lot more intention.
(Look out for a separate post all about what’s going on in my Patreon groups with fun live drawing dates and other details coming in the next day or so.)
Skillshare:
Have you checked out my latest class, Plein Air in Sweden: Relaxing Outdoor Drawing yet? It is such a delight of a class. I really look forward to seeing all of your Hjorthagen sketchbook spreads in the project gallery there on Skillshare. I really really enjoyed putting that class together. I am even thinking about quickly putting together a smaller Fall themed Swedish nature class since it’s so gorgeous this time of year. What do you think? Does that sound interesting?
As always, I would love to know what you’d like me to teach next in an upcoming Skillshare class. Remember that new to Skillshare people can enjoy a free trial with my link here.
Thank you all for being here and sticking around during this move to Substack. I really hope that you’ll like it here and be able to navigate my content even better.
Have a great October!
